You have the power to protect unborn babies from alcohol harm

We all have a right to know about the dangers of products that can cause harm during pregnancy to mothers and their unborn babies.

Yet many people are unaware of the damage alcohol can cause during pregnancy, including permanent brain injury (FASD), miscarriage or stillbirth

Aussies and Kiwis kept in the dark

Many people don’t know about the devastating harm alcohol consumption causes during pregnancy because – unlike other products that have such serious consequences, like some medications – Australians and New Zealanders have been denied clear information on alcohol products to properly inform us about such harm.

And the alcohol industry wants to keep it that way.

Right now, alcohol industry lobbyists are mounting a covert political campaign pressuring Australian and New Zealand health and food ministers to abandon their commitment to mandating alcohol pregnancy warning labels.

For eight long years, alcohol industry obstruction has delayed the introduction of effective pregnancy health warning labels on all alcoholic products, and the industry is now desperately trying to hold onto that power.

If ministers hold firm on Friday 20 March, then we will finally have a label that warns women effectively of the risk of life-long injury to their babies.

Some ministers are wavering under pressure from the alcohol industry to oppose new effective health warnings.

The alcohol industry has pulled out all stops in shameless and inappropriate lobbying to the ministers, all in an effort to protect their profits by keeping Australians and New Zealanders in the dark about the dangers of using alcohol while pregnant.

We cannot afford to miss this opportunity to implement consistent and comprehensive pregnancy health warning labels across all alcohol products.
